Garage Conversions and Garage Extensions
A garage conversion can provide a lot of usable space that is otherwise occupied only by storage if a car is not parked there. Garage conversions can typically be one of the most inexpensive ways to add more liveable space in your property. Whether you need a downstairs office space, or a larger kitchen with a utility, a front room or a play room or even a home gym, a garage conversion can provide a lot of options, along with storage spaces. In some cases a garage can also be converted in to an Annex, as a separate inhabitable space. An advantage of a garage conversion is also that an extra liveable space is added on the ground floor without using any more outdoor space.
Every Extension is Different
Some garage conversions would require planning permission, while others would be within permitted development. However, as for every project, Building regulations are still required in either case. In some cases, a garage conversion will not require digging out new footings if the existing footings meet the requirements, whereas in others, a new cavity wall will be needed to meet the regulations. It is always worth having a discussion with our Architect earlier on the project in case you also want to build a second storey on top of the garage at a later date. As doing a garage conversion will also typically require re configuration of the ground floor, or at least maximizing the usability of the newly created space, it helps hiring a professional Architect to help with your planning, building regulation and internal reconfigurations of your garage conversion project.
